Antique Clawfoot Bathtub

Antique Clawfoot Bathtub.

A question about reglazing a clawfoot bathtub in the braoa.org forum read:

“My sister has an old antique clawfoot bathtub, at least that is what I call it. Two questions: I think it is made of iron. Can it be refinished? Also, when you do the service, would it enhance the value?”

Sometimes on rare occasions you will find an old Antique Claw Foot Bathtub that is in fine shape. If you can gently clean it up and there are no signs of  rust or erosion it may hold more value, just as an original antique car, painting, or firearm. Some items loose value if not in the original condition. However,  it will add value if its in bad shape then restored. Antique Claw Foot Bathtubs sort of remind me of cars. An old mustang or camaro will be worth thousands to some but to others is merely a 40 year old car. If your are looking to make money on it, check out the actual functional condition of it before you invest in restoration. If its in medium shape you will find people who will pay a premium for a certain size or how decorative the feet are. Make sure all the feet match. Pronounced decorative, detailed feet add value. We have a credo we live by in the Antique Claw Foot Bathtub restoration business, “buy the feet first and the rest of the tub comes with them”. The ClawfootSupply.com website has a wealth of information.  One last thing is to turn it over and you will see the maker, the length and the year it was cast, and if its molded from the original casting. This helps with selling.  My last bit of advice, please don’t try a do it yourself kit, its not a diy project. You may think its a biased statement but its like buying auto paint and brushing your car with it. Even though you may find a so called diy kit how well do you think a car would come out if you brushed it on? I seriously doubt you will get the factory look.
